Carriage Court, Welbeck

For The Welbeck Estates Co. Ltd

Carriage Court is located within the ‘Welbeck Village’ on the Welbeck Estate. This area, developed in the mid-nineteenth century, and lies within the Grade II registered Historic Park and Garden, near Worksop, Nottinghamshire.

Woodhall was appointed as architect for the repair and conversion of the Grade II listed Carriage Court to provide modern office accommodation.  A distinctive feature of the building are the panelled timber carriage doors to the courtyard.  These have been sensitively altered to outward opening with glazed screens set behind, to provide cross ventilation and sufficient natural light within the offices whilst maximizing the useable internal floor area.  New oak and steel staircases with frameless glass balustrades were carefully inserted in the main entrances to the east and west ranges. Due to the soft nature of the stone, in many areas it was heavily eroded and in order to minimise the loss of original fabric, repair techniques involved a combination of mortar repairs and stone replacement.
